If you know anything about history, you know that women in the West today have more rights, freedom, wealth, and opportunities than women in any other era—and it’s no contest. Nevertheless, when you speak to young Democrat women, roughly two-thirds will happily tell you that they are victims, helpless pawns in a world dominated by men.

Across most of human history, and in most societies, women lived under legal and social restrictions unimaginable to Western women today. Depending on the place and time, they couldn’t own property, they couldn’t go out in public unescorted, they couldn’t choose a spouse, they couldn’t say no to marital sex, they couldn’t vote, they couldn’t get an education, they couldn’t smoke or drink, they couldn’t engage in extramarital sex, and they couldn’t engage in adultery without shockingly punitive consequences. In other words, for much of human history, a woman’s life was remarkably like a woman’s life under the Taliban today.

Things are different today. Women can freely do all of those things. Moreover, our education system is preparing women to overtake men in high-value employment (people with degrees tend to earn more), especially in the best-paying professions.

The most obvious area is education. In fall 2023, women were almost 58% of college enrollees. In the high-paying fields, they made up 55% of enrollees in both medical and law schools. This may explain why single women have conspicuously outperformed single men for years in homeownership. This isn’t the 1880s anymore.
