Democratic socialist versus MAGA Republican—it’s a war of two extremes equally likely to turn off voters, right?
Not remotely, the data suggests. And that may have big implications this year.
The latest YouGov/Economist poll ran an experiment that asked voters to pick between pairs of hypothetical candidates. When asked to choose between a “Democratic socialist who supports Medicare for All, ending military aid to Israel, and abolishing ICE” and a “MAGA Republican who supports mass deportations and always votes with Trump,” 51% of registered voters went for the socialist, while only 34% picked the MAGA Republican. The remaining 15% were unsure.
Notably, this figure did not change much when the hypothetical socialist candidate was swapped for a “Liberal Democrat who wants to protect Obamacare (ACA), increase support for child care and housing, and opposes tariffs.” Fifty-five percent backed the liberal Democrat, and an identical 34% supported the MAGA Republican.
